Five Fun Activities to Practice Handwriting
“Getting my child to practice handwriting is so challenging!” Does this sound like the words were taken out of your mouth? Engaging children in handwriting can be made easier with fun activities that spark their interest. That is why we have made a list of five, fun activities that you can do at home! So, if your Occupational Therapist has given your child strategies, whether that be to improve their pencil grasp, letter formation, writing on the line, letter heights or letting sizing (just to name a few areas of handwriting!), or you are just looking to help your child with their handwriting practice, you can give these activities a go.
- Spot the difference. Once your child has noticed a difference, have them write it out before clicking on the difference to get a star. https://hellokids.com/r_260/free-online-games/find-the-differences-online-games
- Story dice app. Children love getting to shake the phone to roll the picture dice. Have your child write a sentence including the picture they roll. Add more dice to increase difficulty. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/story-dice-story-telling-id1105668334
- Find the hidden object. Have your child hide an object around the room. They then have to write down clues to help you find it.
- Hidden picture game. When your child finds one of the small hidden pictures within the bigger picture, have them write down the name of the picture they found. https://www.highlightskids.com/games
- Write a letter. Whether it be a family member, friend, neighbour or Santa, writing a letter can be a fun way for children to practice their handwriting.
