Learning Sight Words
The following activities will help and encourage your child to learn and practise their sight words at home. Don’t forget to have FUN!
Learning and recalling sight words can be challenging for many children. Sight words are frequently used and repeated words that often cannot be sounded out or illustrated. Recognition and recall of sight words can assist with independent reading and writing. The following activities will help and encourage your child to learn and practise their sight words at home. Don’t forget to have FUN!
Stick up colourful posters filled with sight words you are targeting. Keep adding to the wall as you learn new words.
Hide flashcards around the house or a room and encourage your child to find them and read them out.
Use sticky notes with sight words written on them. Place them along a path your child often takes e.g. from their room to the bathroom.
Sight Word Hopscotch
Draw hopscotch path with chalk and write words instead of numbers. See if you can say the sight words to reach the end.
Hit the Target
Write sight words on paper plates and stick them up on a wall. Using a plush toy or soft ball, get your child to aim for a sight word that you have called out.
Ninja sight words (you can adjust settings to target specific words).
Carpark Sight Words
Place sight words on the floor, a car mat or write in boxes on a large piece of paper. Use toy cars to ‘park’ on a sight word. Read the sight word before you park a car and see if you can get a full carpark.
Popcorn Sight Words
Copy sight words onto strips of paper. Scrunch them up into popcorn pieces and place them into a container. Unravel the paper and see if you can find and read the popcorn sight words.
Twister Sight Words
Using a twister mat, place sight words on each circle. When you place your left hand on red see if you can read the sight word as well.
‘Splat’ the Sight Word
Using a fly squatter, place out sight words. Have someone call out sight words and see how fast you can ‘splat!’
Sight Words Bingo
Create your own bingo boards filled with sight words.
Play a game of memory using sight word flash cards.
Build a World Tower
Stick sight words onto Duplo Lego blocks. See of you can find the sight word and keep connecting the blocks. How tall can you get the tower?
