10 Apps to Develop Writing Skills

rED Writing

This app is great for developing letter formation and is appropriate for ages 4 -7. The app teaches correct formation of number, lower case and capital letters according to NSW Foundation font. Try the ‘shake a letter’ and ‘letter of the day’ options as well!

Reading Jets

Reading Jets is a fun app that let’s you choose a robot and a letter to trace, select the pictures starting with your chosen letter and play a memory match game with the pictures. It also uses NSW Foundation Font. This app is great for ages 4-6 to develop letter and sound recognition.

ABC and Sight Word Ninja

The ABC and Sight Word Ninja apps are a fun way to work on letter and sight word recognition. This app can be played on easy, medium or hard and the settings allow you to customise what you’re working on. Try selecting words on your child’s sight word list each week and practice on the app!

Montessori Crosswords

This app is great for developing your child’s spelling skills. Your child has to decode and sound out words to play with the interactive screen after each word. This app works on simple consonant-vowel consonant words as well as more challenging blended sounds and diagraphs. Ask your child to problem solve the spelling and then use the write the word out in a sentence.

Toontastic 3D

Your child will love this app straight away. Your child picks a setting and characters to create their very own comic. Ask your child to write out the script for each scene before recording. This app will show your child the story structure and how to sequence events for a detailed story.

Writer’s Hat

This app provides a lucky dip when, who, what and where to help your child get started with story writing. There is another option of ‘word box’ that allows you to insert nouns, verbs and adjectives. Have your child generate and write out sentences using the words that appear.

The Writing Challenge

Does your child find it difficult to think of ideas for creative writing? This app has creative prompts to inspire children to continue writing and expanding on their own ideas. Improve writing skills by using the writing timers. Suitable for children ages 8+.

Lazoo Art Box

This app has lots of fun and interactive activities that work on pencil control and pre-writing skills. This app is suitable for children aged 3+. Try using a stylus to help your child develop a functional pencil grasp while having lots of fun drawing squiggles and shapes!

Rainbow Sentences

This app is great for introducing sentence structure. Your child has to sort the groups of words at the bottom of the page to make a sentence with who, what, when and where. This app is suitable for ages 5-7 with 3 levels of difficulty. Ask your child to copy the sentence on their page.

Popplet

Popplet is an app that is designed to organise your ideas on a virtual mind map. Your child can create a visual plan of their ideas for story writing using this mapping tool. Encourage your child to spend 5 minutes planning organised writing tasks before beginning to write, using this app.

Writing can be a complex task for kids and these apps are a great way to develop skills, generate ideas and inspire young writers!
